CHARACTER
Name: Courtney Babcock
Canon: Paranorman
Age: 16
Specialty: Telepathy (Saves on phone bills!)
Position: Senior Camper

Personality:

Even though Courtney grew up in the same house as Norman, she is about as opposite of her brother as a person can get. She is part of the popular crowd at school even going so far as being on the Cheerleading Squad. Most of the time she’s pretty fast paced. Chattering away with friends and family, adoring the very hot quarterback. Very typical things. Of course…Courtney isn’t exactly your typical cheerleader. She isn’t a bubble blonde and shows to be rather crafty at times. Of course she is a teenaged girl and most of her cleverness goes into getting noticed by boys or fixing some sort of drama with friends. This makes her come across as a bit shallow, which granted she is, just not as much as she seems. Courtney is aware of fashion and tries to keep herself attractive and neatly kept. She even has a sparkly diamond belly button piercing.

Being that she is at ‘that age’, little things tend to easily annoy her. Most often it’s because of her brother and his general weirdness but even things like her friends or simple home life can make her roll her eyes and scoff. Of course coupled with her tendency to be a bit of a sassy snot, Courtney comes across as mean or uncaring. Even if it’s not really her fault.

What most people don’t know about Courtney is that she’s actually pretty stubborn; it comes with the being a cheerleader thing. If she’s dead set on something it’s very, very hard to change her mind about it. Even in actions she’s stubborn. You can see this pretty clearly at the end of the movie. Even though things look pretty bleak, she doesn’t even let her little brother give up. She is also rather bullheaded in her attempts to get QB Mitch Down to notice her. As well as her conviction about her brother’s abilities until proven wrong rather spectacularly.

Though, even if she argues with her brother and shares the same opinion as the rest of the town. Norman is still her little brother and when it is seriously needed, Courtney will stand up for him. Even if she still considers him a little bit of a weirdo, he’s family. And she won’t let anyone seriously hurt him; even going against an angry mob to keep him from getting shot.

AU History:

Courtney is the oldest of the Babcock children, a sassy blonde cheerleader with a tendency to let herself be annoyed and frustrated by the arcain. Of course considering her little brother was practically the town pariah because of he talked to ‘ghosts’ didn’t really help much. She was sort of used to it, since he’d been doing it for most of his life but she refused to believe it wasn’t anything more then just Norman being, well, Norman. As far as she thought, she was the normal one. The popular one. The Cheerleader. Gossip Queen. Whatever. She was not like Norman and she was very happy about that.

Until a man in sunglasses appeared at their home in Blithe. He announced himself as a Psychonaught; a sort of Paranormal Agent that has strange psychic abilities. Abilities that her little brother was also capable of. All Courtney could really think about was that at least there was some sort of explanation. Not that it made things normal, just sort of gave the weird a reason. She’d been only half listening anyways; until the man mentioned that there was a second psychic in the house. Before looking pointedly at her.

Despite her insistence that she wasn’t telepathic, the Agent began to describe things. Hearing things that no one else had. Being able to know what a person was thinking just at a glance. Learning a person’s secrets without having to prod. All things that she had been unconsciously doing since puberty. Courtney was a psychic and had simply not known.

She, of course, vehemently denied it. Going so far as to point at her parents and say she could hear nothing. Then she started to panic; because despite looking straight at her mother…she had heard the woman give a small pitying remark- without opening her mouth at all.

After a lot of work to convince their father, which Courtney really didn’t help with, the man said that she and Norman would spend the summer at Whispering Rock; a camp for psychics. All Courtney could do was stare at the door, thinking to herself that it was going to be the worst summer she had ever had.

Brain World: Locker Room/Giant Walk In Closet

Courtney’s brain, at first glance, seems pretty clean cut. It looks like a two storied locker room that was mixed with a walk in closet. There are doors, benches and cloths every where. It appears to be a rather closed mind, since the only doors around are the bright red locker doors. Which are rather hard to open and even attempting to enter one of the locker areas will get you attacked by Censors. Which come in the form of overly bedazzled phones, the screen flashing a bright red No Symbol while a siren-like ring tone screeches from the speakers. While numerous and quick, they aren’t very sturdy and if you can handle the onslaught of noise then you can try to get into the locker.

Remember, things are not always as they seem, as once the locker is open you’ll get a glimpse into one of Courtney’s memories. Most of them seem normal, such as old games and memorized routines. Or some sort of gossip from school. These are behind the red locker doors; looking closer at the rows though…the locker doors have different colors. Blue is for things she’d much rather forget (most of these are stuffed with Emotional Baggage) while the Green one’s have anything she regrets…of course you might find some cobwebs on some of the older ones. These are the most common locker doors.

Going up to the second floor you’ll run into another cell phone, this one though looks like a flip-phone with a lit up screen. Talk to it and it’ll respond in text (hope you know text speak). The second floor is the place that Courtney would rather keep secret; though there are only a few Censors up here. Here the locker doors are all black and have combination locks. If you manage to open these you’ll find memories of her family. From her Grandmother’s funeral and before.

Going around the second floor will lead you to a hallway with a single door at the end, again it’s a locker door but it looks more like a cage door. There are heavy locks here but someone determined can make it inside. Inside is a young looking Courtney, sitting on the floor and crying softly. All she’s saying is “Why Norman?” “How come he gets to see her?” “Why not me?” “I loved her too…” or “I want to see her.” See, even though Courtney doesn’t believe her brother, very deep down she’s a little (get it?) envious of him. That he gets to still see their Grandmother and talk to her as though she had never passed on.

SAMPLES
Sample 1:
[The video is going to click on, showing a rather annoyed blonde girl. She rubs the bridge of her nose to try and calm herself before speaking to the network.]

Okay, I know everyone here had like these fr-…weird powers. Okay, great. I guess it’s a great idea.

[Now she lowers her hand, placing it on her hip instead.]

So, between fire starters, invisible people and…my brother. Can anyone get rid of the bugs in the girls cabin?!?! They’re just, everywhere. Ugh…it’s gross and I have like no idea how any of you can even think of sleeping with God knows how many legs crawling all over the sheets!

….wait…these bugs aren’t going to like ,read my mind right? I mean everything else in this place is freaky. Why not the things living in my comforter…

Sample 2:

This just couldn’t be happening. There was no way! It was like…it just had to be some sort of crazy dream and any moment now she would wake up and things would be back to normal. Just her luck though, when the door slammed signaling that the strange man was gone; she didn’t wake up. When her parents began to fuss over what exactly they were going to do with the whole Psychic camp thing; she didn’t wake up. Even when her little brother gave a rather sour look and went off to get a few things together early; she didn’t wake up. Her whole world was collapsing around her and it didn’t even have the decency to let her think it was a dream.

Eventually she found herself in her room. Her mom was taking care of telling her coach about missing cheer camp; Courtney was just glad she wasn’t getting kicked off the team. That still left her to deal with her friends. Telling them that she wasn’t going to exactly be around much this summer. If at all. And there wasn’t a single excuse that she could come up with. Her life was over! No one was going to talk to some freak that could read their minds. She sat up, letting her phone clatter to the floor.

The agent had said that telepathy was only one of her powers…what if…what if she started to act just like Norman? Talking to thin air and having lovely conversations with dead people. She grabbed a pillow and screamed into; her frustration with the situation increasing with ever new thought that paraded into her head. It was impossible. She couldn’t be a psychic. A weird freak of nature. She was the normal one! The one who everyone turned to t school to find out just what was happening.

She was a psychic. A telepath. A soothsayer. Whatever words she used it didn’t matter! She was a freak and now? Now she was being sent off to a camp set aside just for people like her. Not a cheer camp oh no, a Psychic Camp. For psychics.

Courtney wiped away a few angry tears and glared at the ceiling. A camp for psychics, “…but…but I’m a cheerleader…”
